Wa Afrika's arrest will keep media in the news

Published: 10 August 2010

Business Day reports that the arrest of Sunday Times journalist, Mzilikazi wa Afrika, is expected to keep the debate on a proposed media tribunal in the news as President Jacob Zuma faces pressure to clarify his government's position on the arrest. Wa Afrika was arrested last Wednesday and denied legal representation for hours.

The heavy-handed manner of Wa Afrika's arrest and the police's insistence on pressing charges despite reluctance by public prosecutors, was seen as an Apartheid-style attempt to intimidate the media. African National Congress (ANC) spokesperson, Jackson Mthembu, will be able to present his party's position on media freedom when he makes a presentation on media diversity and ownership today.
