Lower-income market titles now SA's biggest selling publications

Published: 13 November 2007

Publications aimed at the lower-income market have joined the ranks of South Africa's biggest selling titles. These include Media24's Daily Sun newspaper and Move! magazine. The Daily Sun newspaper has increased to become South Africa’s biggest selling newspaper. Within a year of its launch, Movie! magazine has almost tripled its circulation. It sells 86 647 copies a fortnight. Move! editor, Sbu Mpungose says, “This achievement sends the message to advertisers that they cannot afford to ignore this market when it comes to their print campaigns”. Mpungose adds, “We give advice on relationships, health and career matters, but we try to reflect how people live through the language, frame of reference and concepts we use”. The magazine’s readership falls within the LSM 4-6 bracket and target black women up to the age of 35 years. The Daily Sun recently displaced the Sunday Times as the most-read newspaper in the All Media and Products Survey when it hit the 3.7 million readers a day mark. Circulation is on a steady growth path with 467 681 sales a day. According to Nielsen Media Research, the Daily Sun has progressed from commanding ad revenue of about R3.4 million to R153.6 million. Daily Sun editor, Themba Khumalo says, “Education is now becoming a more important focus for us as a newspaper. It is not only about ghosts, goblins and stabbed people”. Khumalo adds, “If our readers are not going to talk about it in Soweto, Mamelodi, Umlazi and in the factories, we don’t need it in the paper”.
