Discovery Networks showcase local Mzansi content on Discovery Channel and Animal Planet

Published: 6 February 2012

This March, the focus will be on Africa on Discovery Networks with a host of local content on both Discovery Channel and Animal Planet.

Follow UK comedian and presenter Bill Bailey as he investigates how baboons have adapted to a wide range of environments in Baboons with Bill Bailey, premiering on Discovery Channel on Saturday, 3 March at 19:05. From Cape Town to the Ethiopian highlands, this series takes a light-hearted look at baboons’ ability to eat almost anything they can get their hands on, and how adaptable behaviour has allowed them to survive with jungle instinct and urban grit. Bailey will also reveal the baboon's extraordinary displays of hierarchy, and the compelling relationships that exist within the notorious baboon gangs who patrol the streets of Cape Town, robbing tourists of their possessions. Bill Bailey brings his natural enthusiasm for the subject, with warmth and wit, and reveals the intricacies of life for these fascinating primates.

A regular visitor to Mzansi and a seasoned trekker and TV presenter, Julia Bradbury embarks on a truly grand adventure in South Africa Walks. Premiering on Discovery Channel, Bradbury sets out on four very different walks that explore South Africa’s claim to be ‘a world in one country’. This is Bradbury’s chance to go far beyond the normal tourist destinations, to a series of increasingly remote locations. The Garden Route, Drakensburg, Kruger National Park and the Green Kalahari are the fascinating locations that will make up this captivating series.

In another part of Africa, and premiering on Animal Planet for the first time, Wild Animal Orphans takes viewers on a journey to a place where humans care for wild animals that cannot fend for themselves. The wildlife and rehabilitation sanctuary, Naankuse, is situated 13 kilometres east of Windhoek and it is here that Marlice van Vuuren and her family devote themselves to orphaned animals which have lost their parents due to injury or death. Lucky, the three-legged cheetah, and other cheetahs that have survived stock farmers' gin traps and bullets; leopards, lions, caracal, wild dogs, baboons, and a troop of meerkats are but a few of the orphaned animals that are cared for at this amazing safe haven.

As part of the 'Rescue Zone Block', Wild Animal Orphans premieres on Tuesday 6 March at 22:00 on Dstv channel 264.
