Discovery Networks shift survival genre into the fast lane with One Car Too Far

Published: 26 March 2012

Discovery Networks International (DNI) has announced that it will broadcast One Car Too Far, an all-new survival series from London-based production company Dragonfly, later this year.

The series follows a former British special forces operative and an American petrolhead as they are dropped into incredible landscapes and forced to work together to survive and ultimately escape to safety. The twist: they will have to take a small red car with them. It’s the perfect combination, as one knows how to drive and the other knows how to survive. With no proper roads and no real supplies, the two must rely on instinct and expertise alone to make it out. One Car Too Far will premiere on Discovery Channel across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the US later this year.

One Car Too Far is a new twist in the world of survival programming, following two thrill-seeking guides on a heart-stopping expedition that not only showcases creative problem solving and survival, but does so in a fun and humorous manner,” said Luis Silberwasser, executive vice president and chief content officer for Discovery Networks International. “The series parallels the core of Discovery’s brand, as the global leader in compelling storylines and entertaining, factual programming.”

“Audiences across the globe thrive on the ‘will they or won’t they make it’ drama of survival programs and are captivated by the practical nature of car shows. One Car Too Far combines these two genres like never before to create a truly unique concept that offers a real sense of fun,” said Sarah Davies, vice president of development, factual programming for Discovery Networks International. “Literally taking the road less travelled, this series brings viewers on a thrilling ride as the two adventurers put their smarts and creativity to work in the ultimate survival experience.”

“We've found two new, very exciting presenters who are the key to One Car Too Far: authentic, authoritative, tough, and very funny," said Sanjay Singhal, managing director for Dragonfly. “They're exactly the right people to pull off the insane challenges we’ve created for them.”

One Car Too Far elevates the survival genre to a new level as the men — already in a dire situation — are burdened with the added complication of driving a car through unknown elements and cruel conditions. In each episode, the two are dropped into a different wilderness or extreme environment with a car that is not especially equipped for the given terrain. From the treacherous slopes and near-freezing temperatures of a mountain top, to the wet, dense vegetation of the rainforest, they use whatever supplies they can find to turn a regular car into an all-purpose vehicle to get them over, under and through just about any obstacle in their way. Over the course of three days, they employ unusual survival tips and quirky mechanical tricks that help them and their car escape — like taking ordinary parts from their car to create hunting weapons or using an egg to seal the crack in their car’s radiator. Each episode ends with a spectacular do-or-die car stunt that exerts mechanical brilliance, supreme driving skills and a lot of luck in order to bring them both to safety.

One Car Too Far is produced for Discovery Networks International by Dragonfly. For Discovery Networks International, Sarah Davies is executive producer. For Dragonfly, Sarah Swingler and Sanjay Singhal are executive producers.
