Guitarist Tony Cox brings latest show to NAF

Published: 7 June 2012

Acoustic guitar guru and legend Tony Cox is bringing his 19th show, titled Wreckless, Precise, Guitar to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown.

Any discussion about acoustic guitar playing in South Africa includes the name of Tony Cox. Known throughout the country and well beyond its borders for his unique and uncompromising approach to his own music and guitar playing, the multiple SAMA-winning guitarist brings his new show to this year's National Arts Festival, making it his 19th production there in 22 years.

The show is titled 'Wreckless, Precise Guitar', which describes Cox's playing in a nutshell. He is not afraid to push the boundaries of his own skills and although his playing is extremely precise, it comes across as loose and effortless as only a master of the craft of acoustic guitar playing can achieve.

His shows, though, are not all dry technique and a display of skill. Using much dry humour and linking each piece he plays to the story that brought about that piece, Cox often has his audiences in stitches and then gob-smacked by what his flying fingers can produce from what is, essentially, a wooden box with six strings.

If you are on your way to the festival this year, be sure not to miss out on this world-class performer who, besides being a trailblazer, has been a great inspiration and mentor to many of the younger acoustic guitar players one now sees at the festival.
