International ballet star for Le Canard

Published: 19 June 2012

Guest artist ballerina Michaela DePrince will feature in an exclusive and intimate “ballet dinner” at Le Canard in Sandton on 24 July.

Join The South African Ballet Theatre and Mzansi Productions at an exciting, one-night-only dinner with visiting US artist Michaela DePrince.

The multi-talented DePrince stars in First Position, an acclaimed documentary recently screened at the Cannes Film Festival. Her remarkable talents blossomed from Sierra Leone to the international stages, including performances on Dancing with the Stars and Natasha Bedingfield. Michaela will also be appearing in the South African premiere of the great ballet classic, Le Corsaire, at the Joburg Theatre from 19 July.

Fans and followers of South Africa’s finest dancers will not be disappointed; also attending the dinner are ballet stars Angela Malan, Anya Carstens, Burnise Silvius and Shannon Glover. Canadian guest artist Alys Shee will also perform.

Performances at the dinner will include excerpts from Le Corsaire, together with highlights from the recent sell-out Gala Ballet productions at Montecasino and Brooklyn Theatres.

Le Canard restaurant in Sandton will again play host to this sought-after “ballet dinner” event. Rated as one of the country’s finest restaurants, Le Canard’s chef-patron, Freda Appelbaum, and Maitre d’, Chet Diepraam, will present a gourmet menu with influences themed on Le Corsaire. Guests can expect a multi-course dinner with Mediterranean flavours and Turkish fusion. Served at each ballet dinner is Ondine, SABT’s official wine from the award-laden Ormonde Private Cellar on the West Coast.

Past dinners have received fantastic reviews and have been successful in terms of pairing performances, cuisine, wine and the fundraising aspect. To this end, Le Canard and SABT were nominated for, and won, a Business and Arts South Africa Award.
