Published: 27 June 2012

With only a few days to go until 2012 National Arts Festival in Grahamstown is in full swing, audiences can look forward to the award-winning and inspirational Sibikwa Arts Indigenous Orchestra who will be presenting their stunning production of The Origins – Ekuqaleni, from 4 to 6 July, at the popular St. Aidan’s Chapel.

This rhythmic journey, which explores the African spirit through the use of traditional musical instruments, is performed by an ensemble of musicians who will bring alive the sounds of the Marimba, African Percussion/Drumming, Kudu Horns, Dinaka Pipes, Kalimba, Uhadi and Mauve, also adding to the mix ethereal chanting and the beats of indigenous dance. Ekuqaleni brings its own distinct and eclectic flavor to the stage, while combining the earthy rhythms of traditional Africa with a contemporary 21st century spin, ultimately presenting a unique blend of sounds and beats reminiscent of the old and new African music scene. Add to that the stunning elements of choreography and you have a truly original music experience for the whole family.

The somewhat new Sibikwa Arts Indigenous Orchestra - founded in 2008 – has already garnered much success in its young life, including winning a coveted Ovation Award at the Grahamstown National Arts Festival, in 2010, for a score they composed to support a dance choreographed by the Sibikwa Arts Dance Company. The group was invited to perform in Berlin at the Delphic Games, in 2011 and in the very same year stunned audiences with their performance at the Jaffna Folk Music Festival in Sri Lanka.

They then won yet another coveted Ovation Award for their programme titled Re-Alignment. It was during this period that the orchestra also embarked on a hugely successful schools tour of Lecture Demonstrations, which led to the group being employed by the National Sasol Schools Festival to perform nationally. In May this year, the group launched their debut CD, Celebration, which was recorded under the musical direction of award-winning South Africa master percussionist and singer Tlale Makhene.

Tickets cost R50 and performances are on 4 July at 11:00, 5 July at 17:00 and 6 July at 11:00 and 20:00.
