In the next episode of Special Assignment ...
Stories range from men who have had their genitals allegedly electrocuted, people being partially blinded due to gunshot injuries and general tales of indiscriminate assaults on women and children by farmers or a group of people acting on their instructions. Many families that were born in the farming areas of Wakkerstroom, Commondale, Dirkiesdorp, Driefontein, and the surrounding farms, say they are not allowed access to the graves of their loved ones, some of which have either been deliberately destroyed or turned into plantations.

Activists in the community have raised concern that those who have the power to turn their situation around are not doing so. New cases are reported almost on a daily basis and some have been ongoing for the past 16 years but they hardly ever get resolved. Observers says land ownership remains a sensitive issue in South Africa and the inadequate response to the fears and rising tensions in that part of the country could turn out to be a recipe for disaster.

Watch Special Assignment on Thursday, 12 July on SABC3 at 21:00.
