As South Africa celebrates Women’s Day the team reflects on the ongoing ill-treatment of the elderly women of our country in the upcoming episode of Special Assignment on Thursday, 9 August on SABC3 at 21:00.

In the next episode of Special Assignment ...
This week, the team bring yous the story of 83-year old Rose Montshiwagae who was overpowered by her rapist at night while she was asleep at her house in Taung, North West province. A year after her ordeal she speaks out against what happened to her and is now calling for justice.

So many months later, the perpetrators have not been arrested and she has not heard a word from the police, despite a case having been opened at a local police station. In this episode, the team follows her as she gathers enough strength to go back to her home that she escaped after her harrowing ordeal. A year later, she faces her fears in her first step towards fighting for justice.

She is one among the many elderly women that continue to suffer sexual abuse at the hands of their relatives, neighbours and society in general. The extent of institutional neglect of these citizens is alarming. In Taung in particular, some gangs of young unemployed boys have been fingered as the culprits behind the heinous crimes.

The World Health Organisation says the abuse of the elderly results in injury or pain, the loss or violation of human rights, and a decreased quality of life for the older person. Is there such a realization in our country and is enough being done to ensure the better quality of life for the country’s senior citizens?

The next episode of Special Assignment will be broadcast on SABC3 at 21:00 on Thursday, 9 August.
