Date my Dad's Meran Wilson chooses his dream date

Published: 17 August 2012

18 days since being announced Jacaranda FM’s most dateable dad, 34-year-old Meran Wilson from Centurion announced his dream date on Friday morning, 17 August during the grand finale of Date My Dad 2012.

Rian van Heerden and the Jacaranda FM Complimentary Breakfast team broadcast live from Emperors Palace – the venue where Wilson got to spend some quality, one-on-one time with each of the five finalists. “Tough” week for Wilson, having to woo 5 beautiful, finely selected ladies - Nadine Badenhorst, Licia de Bod, Chantelle Engelbrecht, Tania Coetzee and Melanie Joubert – between 12 and 16 August.

They were all in studio on Friday morning – each sharing their impressions of Wilson on their respective dates. It turns out that his daughter, 4-year-old Isabel, and 6-year-old son, Kieren, were spot-on in saying that their dad was an all-round nice, fix-it-all, fun kind of guy that any girl out there would be fortunate to have.

All five ladies knew this and, though Rian gave them the option to “exit the show with your dignity intact before we start the elimination process”, they all chose to stay – not making Wilson’s choice any easier.

He, too, said that the choice would be incredibly difficult, with each one of the ladies having something uniquely beautiful and exciting to offer. “The only thing I really base my final decision on is whether I can see this person walking my path with me, whether she is heading in the same direction,” he said.

With friends, family and many public supporters outside the studio window – watching the drama unfold – one lady was eliminated each half an hour starting at 08:00. Coetzee, De Bod and Badenhorst were first to go. They were clearly more than ‘fairly’ disappointed, but still in good spirits and more than open to the idea of a good friendship with Wilson after the competition was over.

A few tense moments passed in the 15 minutes leading up to 10:00, with Engelbrecht, who works in dentistry, and Joubret, who works in finance, as the final two – each with an equal chance of becoming Wilson's favourite date and, perhaps, the future Mrs. Wilson.

A selection process, quite a few in-studio interviews, an on-air singing debut, a surprise psychic evaluation, a secret wardrobe inspection, a lady-selection process, a Stuttafords makeover, some dancing, cocktail mixing, cooking, casino games, a live show, five Emperors Palace dates and a grand finale later, Wilson chose Joubert to be the lady by his side – all to the soundtrack of champagne corks popping and a roaring round of applause from the crowd, including the other finalists.

The normally composed Joubert was absolutely elated and Wilson, definitely relieved, was absolutely sure that he had made the right choice.

The two are in agreement about one thing: “This has been an interesting and immensely fun ride so far. We both know what we signed up for and we’re going to take it one step at a time – no expectations … just good fun, good friendship and whatever happens from there.”
