Avigail Bushakevitz wins SAMRO Foundation Overseas Scholarship for Western Art Music

The Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) congratulates violinist Avigail Bushakevitz on winning the prestigious SAMRO Foundation Overseas Scholarship for Western Art Music on Saturday, 18th August.

Bushakevitz, who recently graduated from the Juilliard School of Music in New York, will now be able to further her postgraduate studies overseas thanks to the R170 000 scholarship she won in the SAMRO-sponsored competition.

The talented young violinist can be seen in action with the JPO this Wednesday, 22 August and Thursday, 23 August, at the Linder Auditorium, and at the ZK Matthews Hall at UNISA at 15:00 on Sunday, 26 August.

Accompanied by the JPO and under the baton of resident guest conductor Bernhard Gueller, Bushakevitz will perform Saint-Saëns’s Violin Concerto No.3, op.61, B minor. The programme also features Debussy’s Petite Suite and Mendelssohn’s Symphony No.4, op.90, A major (Italian).

The JPO’s Wednesday and Thursday night concerts take place at the Linder Auditorium, located at 27 St Andrew’s Road, Parktown, at 20:00. The Sunday-afternoon concerts at Unisa’s ZK Matthews Hall in Pretoria start at 15:00. Tickets are available at Computicket or at the door.
