Alexander Upstairs to add more shows of The Epicene Butcher and Other Stories for Consenting Adults

Published: 7 December 2012

Due to popular demand Alexander Upstairs are squeezing in two more shows of The Epicene Butcher and Other Stories for Consenting Adults.

Two more shows have been added to the Epicene Butcher’s brief Cape Town run on Wednesday, 12 and Thursday, 13 December at 21:00 each night. Tickets are also still available for Saturday, 8 December at 21:00.

In The Epicene Butcher, the Japanese storytelling art of Kamishibai is given a profane, hilarious and utterly original revival. Kamishibai which is widely regarded as the precursor to anime originated as a form of street theatre in the 1930s. Storytellers travelled from village to village on bicycle, entertaining audiences with the use of illustrated paper panels and a specially crafted wooden stage. Today, there are fewer than 100 Kamishibai performers left in Japan.

This is the Cape Town premiere of this cross-cultural oddity after it has dazzled audiences in Grahamstown, Johannesburg and the Fringe Amsterdam Festival where it swept up the Critics’ Choice and Best International Production Awards.

Book online at alexanderbar.co.za or by calling 021 300 1652. The bar and café downstairs from the little theatre is open daily for pre and post show drinks and light meals with the kitchen open til midnight and the bar until at least 01:00 from Mondays to Saturdays.
