MPASA backs ABC stand on Media24 breach

Published: 18 February 2008

At a meeting of the MPASA Board on Tuesday, 12 February, the Board discussed the ABC findings, following their complete audit of all Media24 titles. MPASA fully supports the further findings of the ABC and its recommendations regarding irregularities on other Media24 titles.

MPASA has committed to the ABC to work with MPASA members to ensure that they understand their responsibilities with regard to the correct auditing of their titles and internal workings within the ABC. MPASA will further emphasise to its members their responsibility to query any rule with the ABC should they experience confusion or ambiguity.

The following Media24 titles, suspended by MPASA in October 2007, were re-instated:
Fairlady, True Love, True Love Babe, InStyle, Leef, Sarie, True Love Bride, Men’s Health, Sports Illustrated, Wisden Cricketer, Shape and KickOff.

No further penalty was imposed on Media24.

The MPASA stands by the need for complete transparency in reporting and compliance with the rules and Code of Conduct of the ABC. Members need to take responsibility for understanding these rules. The MPASA encourages members to access ABC training workshops as required, retain auditors who understand ABC rules, and seek guidance from these auditors.

The MPASA Board notes that the ABC found that Media24 was involved in fraudulent activities with relation to the titles that were suspended in October 2007, and that the circulations were deliberately manipulated. The Board reiterates its condemnation of this in the strongest possible terms.
