Times Media has announced that Marvin Meintjies will be the editor of Sunday World as from Friday, 1 March. Meintjies was previously deputy editor at The Times, and is currently deputy editor of the Sunday Times. Avusa Media fares well at recent ABC release
Avusa titles posted healthy growth in the latest ABC figures released for the fourth quarter of 2010. Sunday Times, the group’s flagship title, grew its circulation to 462 366 (Oct-Dec 2010), but it was its daily sister, The Times, that posted excellent results. The Times now has a circulation of 141 271, an increase of nearly three percent.
<i>Sunday Times</i> invests in SA&#39;s literacy
The Sunday Times has published one-million storybooks to be distributed freely to schools across the country. Translated into English, Afrikaans, isiZulu, Setswana, isiNdebele, Sepedi, Siswati, Tshivenda and Xitsonga, especially designed for Foundation Phase, Grades R to 3; and Intermediate Phase, Grades 4 to 6.

Prominent KwaZulu-Natal editor, Thulani Mbatha, has been appointed as the new editor for the Sunday Times Zulu edition, starting Tuesday, 4 January. Mbatha will be responsible for driving and implementing the next growth phase of the publication, which will see more local news stories and columns added to the paper.

Barbara Friedman named as journalist of the year
Vodacom hosted its annual Journalist of the Year awards ceremony at Vodaworld in Midrand on 12 November, where; e.tv’s Barbara Friedman was announced as the journalist of the year. Friedman won the honour for her piece titled ‘Girl/Boy’, which aired on 3rd Degree. Reikhutsitse Malala attended the awards and reports back.
Times LIVE reports that Sunday Times journalist, Rowan Philp, scooped top honours in the print category at the 2010 Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards held on Friday, 12 November in Midrand. He received the award for a series of articles he wrote on earthquake-torn Haiti.

Barbara Friedman was named the Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2010 at a function held at Vodaworld on Friday evening, 12 November. The winning piece, titled 'Girl/Boy' was aired on e.tv’s 3rd Degree and reported that South Africa has one of the highest birth rates of inter-sexed babies worldwide.
Entries open for 2011 <i>Sunday Times Literary Awards</i>

The Sunday Times will publish in a language other than English for the first time in its 104-year history when the first Zulu edition launches on Sunday, 7 November. The newspaper, formally called the Sunday Times Zulu Edition, will be distributed in KwaZulu-Natal, throughout Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Northern Natal and Zululand.

MediaShop announces that AMPS data is released
Today sees the release of the latest SAARF AMPS data. The field work for this survey was carried out between July 2009 and June 2010, and this is the first year that we can compare to last year’s AMPS, as both years used the new DS CAPI methodology.

2010 <i>Sunday Times Food Awards</i> receives record number of entries
A record number of entries were received this year for the Sunday Times Food Awards in association with Foodcorp, with over 48 entries for Chef of the Year; 32 for Young Chef; and 11 teams from various chef schools around the country entered into the Chef School Challenge.
On Thursday, 16 September, Kerryn Le Cordeur attended a cocktail function at the Protea Hotel Balalaika in Sandton, where the Northern and Southern region winners of the 2010 Vodacom Journalist of the Year Awards were announced. This was the last leg of the regional rounds of the competition, with the national awards ceremony taking place in November.

Poland&#39;s <i>Metro</i> named <i>Young Reader Newspaper of Year</i>
The Metro newspaper in Poland has been named the 2010 World Young Reader Newspaper of the Year in the annual competition organized by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishing (WAN-IFRA).
News24 reports that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has provisionally withdrawn charges against Sunday Times journalist, Mzilikazi Wa Afrika, and his co-accused, Victor Mlimi. According to the NPA, the matter needs to be fully investigated before the decision is made on whether or not to prosecute.
<i>Sunday Times</i> awards iconic brands at <i>Top Brands Awards</i>
The expanded Sunday Times Top Brands Awards, held on 26 August, was themed ‘what a year, what a country, what a brand’. Sunday Times once again commissioned TNS Research Surveys to conduct the Top Brands survey, which captured how the spirit of this year saw iconic brands and brand builders that made SA feel proud come out tops.
Pretoria News reports that deputy press ombudsman, Johan Retief, has dismissed a complaint by Team Media Israel against a column published by Ben Trovato on 6 June which made reference to 'poison gas' and Nazism. Acting Chairman of the SA Press Appeals Panel, Neville Woudberg, added that the column was in line with Trovato's style of 'pure satire'.
Some of the country’s top sporting media will be competing to be named the SAB Sports Journalist of 2010 when the 30th SAB Sports Journalist of the Year Awards are made in Johannesburg on 6 September. This week the judges released the line-up of finalists for this year’s Awards.

Sunday Times readership on the rise
The Sunday Times reports that it has increased its readership to nearly 4-million, according to figures released by the All Media and Products Survey (AMPS). The figures, covering July 2008 to June 2009, show that readership increased from 3 896 000 to 3 977 000 over the year, an increase of 2.1%. Overall, weekly newspapers increased their readership by 0.2%.
