Awaiting the coming of Digital Terrestrial Television
The SABC, e.tv and M-Net have long been preparing consumers for their move from analogue broadcast to Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT). The Department of Communications initially stated, via their website, www.godigitalsa.co.za, that DTT would be available to the public in 2010, yet three years on – we still await the digital transformation.
<i>ITWeb Africa</i> spreads its continental wings
On Wednesday, 9 May, ITWeb Africa, the latest online editorial offering from technology publisher ITWeb (which also produces a number of industry websites and publications) was officially launched at Rosebank’s Hyatt Regency hotel. South Africa’s largest technology publisher, ITWeb, launched its new ITWeb Africa website on Wednesday, 9 May to 250 of the most influential stakeholders and role players in the continent’s ICT sector at the Hyatt Hotel in Rosebank.
ITWeb has come out in support of this year's Earth Hour with a pledge to plant one tree for every 10 readers who commit to taking part in the global initiative. Now in its fifth year, Earth Hour sees homes and businesses around the world switch off non-essential lighting between 20:30 and 21:30 on 31 March, to raise awareness around climate change and the environment.
Following a series of high-profile breaches, major information security vendors are conceding that there is little to stop a determined cyber criminal from breaching security and wreaking havoc. IT security needs a rethink, they say. This will be the theme of the annual ITWeb IT Security Summit to be staged at the Sandton Convention Centre from 15 to 17 May.
ITWeb’s social media activist, Tallulah Habib, has been promoted to social media manager and ITWeb brand ambassador. Facebook posts strong results
ITWeb.co.za reports that Facebook's financial performance is stronger than previously believed, its growth in users and advertisers boosted 2009 revenue to as much as $800-million.
Spectrum auction deadline extended

Prepaid price war on the cards
ITWeb.co.za reports that Vodacom has announced it will drop its prepaid tariff to 2.8c per second, meeting MTN's announcement that it is cutting calls to less than 3c per second. Vodacom South Africa's MD, Shameel Joosub, says: “By lowering the all day prepaid call rates, our customers can pay less and talk more at any time of the day when calling Vodacom family and friends"
ITWeb reports that just a few small-scale ICT projects received a mention in Premier, Nomvula Mokonyane's, state of the province address. Industry watchers are again been disappointed by a lack of focus on ICT, this time in the Gauteng state of the province address.
ITWeb.co.za reports that President Jacob Zuma has called on African countries to speed up the roll-out of ICT services. Speaking during a meeting of heads of state and government at the African Union, Zuma said development would not be possible without the roll-out of ICT infrastructure and services around the continent.
ITWeb.co.za reports that although the South African Airways (SAA) website is back online, the costs of this have exceeded the R11.5-million in daily sales lost after being offline this weekend. The website is the main mechanism through which SAA sells tickets and communicates with potential customers around the world.
ITWeb reports that a federal appeals court in New York has rejected a class-action lawsuit seeking to hold Apple responsible for possible hearing loss caused by using its iPod music player. The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco affirmed a 2008 district court ruling that the plaintiffs failed to show that use of the iPod poses an unreasonable risk of noise-induced hearing loss.
