The first two of the five regional ceremonies for the Vodacom Journalist of the Year 2015 award winners were recently announced. These prestigious awards recognise excellence in journalism across various media categories.

Several Media24 journalists were among the category winners at the KwaZulu-Natal and Western Cape ceremonies.

The following Media24 journalists were awarded as regional winners in KwaZulu-Natal:

  • 2015 Online winner: Giordano Stolley, News24, Health Department Adviser Who Earns More Than Zuma; 
  • 2015 Photography winner: Tebogo Letsie, City Press, Flames of Hate Engulf Durban; and
  • 2015 Print News winner Rowan Philp, The Witness, South Africa’s R1-trillion Nuclear Deal (Body of Work).

The following Media24 journalists were awarded as regional winners in the Western Cape:

  • 2015 Online winner: Kim Harrisberg, News24, Living on the edge; 
  • 2015 Print Feature winner: Maygene Prins, Die Burger, A Moran Called Violence (Body of Work); and 
  • 2015 Print News winner: Jana Breytenbach, Die Burger, Zephany Nurse’s Story.

The Bloemfontein, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth ceremonies will be held on Tuesday, 13 October, Wednesday, 14 October and Thursday, 15 October respectively.

Each regional winner receives R5000 and travels to Johannesburg for the national finals on Tuesday, 27 November.

National category winners will each receive R10 000 and the overall Vodacom Journalist of the Year Award winner will take home R100 000.
