Joburg Style pays tribute to Drum magazine in its latest issue, which hit the shelves late October. The magazine’s cover is a recreation of an iconic Drum cover, featuring Miriam Makeba and photographed by Jürgen Schadeberg. The original June 1957 cover features Mama Africa in song, with record covers as a background. With this as inspiration, Lira – winner of a South African Music Award (SAMA) for her hit “Feel Good” - was asked to fill Miriam Makeba’s legendary shoes.

Well-known photographer, Steve Tanchell, was commissioned to recreate the image, this time without the threat of arrest for contravening the Immorality Act - something Jürgen Schadeberg experienced after his notorious shoot with Dolly Rathebe on a mine dump in her bathing suit. Well-known fashion designer Thula Sindi recreated the dress Lira wears on the cover.

Drum magazine represents a time when fearless journalists and photographers took to the streets of Johannesburg and neighbouring communities to capture the stars, the people and moments that define who we are today,” says editor, Clive Vanderwagen, “Paying tribute to this media icon was hugely exciting for us.”

The issue features an interview with photographer Jürgen Schadeberg and Johannesburg songbird Lira, and can be found at all good hotels around the city, as well as CNA and Exclusive Books. The magazine is now available at Lulu coffee shops around Johannesburg and comes with a free filter coffee for every purchase of Joburg Style.

The magazine, published quarterly by Ballyhoo Media, looks at the best Johannesburg has to offer, from restaurants and attractions to events and people. The next issue of Joburg Style will focus on the many sports events in the city and will be distributed at the Joburg Open as well the A1 Grand Prix Ignition Party.
