COPE
There seems to have been nothing but bickering from the start. Now - in the wake of court rulings that he should remain COPE President, despite a vote of no confidence against him - Mosiuoa Lekota has been described as “a shepherd without a flock”. His arch-rival Mbhazima Shilowa, whom he has accused of misappropriating election funds, says he doesn’t recognise him as party leader, despite the ruling. So what is the future of the Congress of the People, once seen as a viable alternative to the ANC? Carte Blanche speaks to major players in a party that seems far from coping.

Soccer Chic
We may not have the world’s top football side, but we certainly have some of the world’s best supporters. They go to great lengths for their teams, and it’s not just the vibrant sound of vuvuzelas and smelly fish skulls glued to hard hats. It’s about flair; enthusiasm; and passion. Carte Blanche goes on the road with some of South Africa’s unique football fans, documented in a new book called Soccer Chic.

SKA telescope
When it’s completed, the Square Kilometre Array will be the biggest telescope on earth and the race is on as to where it will be situated. South Africa or Australia? Its precursor, KAT-7, in the once-sleepy Karoo town of Carnarvon, has already produced its first image of an astronomical object. That puts us ahead of the Aussies in the World Cup of Science. Carte Blanche did some observing.

With the event finally upon us, Carte Blanche finds out more about Bafana Bafana’s preparations - and their chances.
