The tag line will include messaging urging users to save electricity, accompanied by power saving tips and the 49M tag line: ‘Remember your power’. “As a partner to the 49M campaign we are pleased to be adding the 49M messaging to our call back facility, as it aligns with our strong commitment to conserving energy, being sustainable and truly making to difference to the environment,” says Robert Madzonga, chief corporate services officer at MTN SA.

The 49M campaign was launched in March last year by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe and Minister of Public Enterprises, Malusi Gigaba as a response to the country’s constrained power system, climate change, the recent economic downturn and rising electricity costs. The campaign encourages individuals and corporates to lead energy smart lifestyles thereby saving the planet and their pockets. MTN is one of the 40 corporate partners who have pledged to support this movement to date.

Supporting partners pledge to embark on ensuring that their organisations, staff and all areas of immediate influence, are educated about the campaign and the benefits of changing their behaviour towards a better tomorrow for this and future generations. The 49M National Road Show was launched last month by Minister Gigaba in Mpumalanga province and was rolled out last week in Cape Town. The 49M team which was led by the Minister of Public Enterprises, went on a community blitz to change household light bulbs to energy efficient ones and handed over various energy saving kits such as geyser blankets.

“MTN is a catalyst for social change in South Africa and as 49M is about a better future for all South Africans economically, socially and environmentally, from an MTN perspective this initiative aims to remind South Africans on our network that they have the power to make a much needed difference to the environmental state of our country and of course, globally, as it is the responsibility of each of us to conserve energy,” concludes Madzonga.
