The concert features thirteen talented young artists residing in KZN. The KZN Philharmonic is particularly proud of Tshegofatso Mokobe (viola) and Stella Benbooi (violin). These two young musicians are in the orchestra’s cadetship programme. This is a programme whereby young South African musicians join the orchestra on a full-time basis for which they receive funding, while benefiting from individual lessons by senior orchestra musicians. The chosen musicians normally focus on historically disadvantaged students. Mokobe whose music teacher is David Snaith will perform Telemann’s Viola Concerto and Benbooi whose teacher is Violeta Osorhean will perform Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto.

The programme also features Keziah Peel (saxophone) who is no stranger to the Young Performers Concert. Peel is the winner of the ‘Classical Performers Competition’ at the University of KwaZulu Natal 2011 and has been awarded a scholarship to study music performance at The Royal College of Music in London. She will perform Marcello’s Concerto for Oboe which has been transcribed for saxophone.

We also have Sakhile Humbane, a grade 11 pupil at Durban High School on a music scholarship. He has played his grade three, five and seven Royal Schools exams and achieved high distinctions for all three. He received the highest mark in KZN for his grade seven exam and received an award from the South African Society of Music Teachers. He will perform Chaminade’s Concerto for Flute and Orchestra.

The rest of the programme includes Kiara Moodley (violin), taught by Violetta Osorhean and she will perform Vivaldi’s Violin Concerto, Catherine Lin (flute) performing Mozart’s Flute Concerto number one, Langelihle Mngxati (bass baritone) performing Mozart’s Magic Flute: 'In diesem Heil’gen Hallen'.

Wesley Lewis (clarinet) performing Weber’s Clarinet Concertino, Bheki Ngwazi performing Verdi’s Luisa Miller: “Quando le sere al placido” and Ayesha Seedat (violin) who will treat us to a performance of Kabelevsky’s Violin Concerto.

Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi will be performed by Mthobisi Ndlela (baritone), Brett Alborough (clarinet) performing Krommer’s Clarinet Concerto number two and lastly Wayne Mkhize a student of Lionel Mkhize will perform Lehar’s Giuditta: ‘Dien ist mein ganzes herz’.
