Umhlanga's first authentic crafters market has hit town and we're over the moon about it! If you haven't noticed by now, markets are all the rage again. Unlike most trendy fads that come and go faster than the nail varnish of the super cool that develop them, this one is rooted in a more grounded philosophy: a return to sustainable living, for ourselves, for our neighbours, for the planet.

Reborn out of a need for simplicity in a world that's too high tech, it's a way for people to reconnect with each other in the spirit of community - the old-fashioned way. Shake hands with your grocer, chat with your dressmaker and listen to music that comes from real instruments.

The Wonder Market captures the atmosphere of a jovial day out in the country, yet it's less than a bike's ride away from your doorstep - if you live in the village, that is. Nestled among the trees of the Chris Saunders Park opposite Gateway, there's a sense of natural enchantment: colourful stalls bursting with quality goods draw you in, while the smells of home-cooked treats convince you to linger longer. More importantly, the Wonder Market embraces a local, environmentally friendly, creative, innovative stance on the shopping experience. You are guaranteed genuinely good products from sincere and dedicated artisans who love what they do.

Furthermore, it's a fun day out for the whole family; children can feed the geese at the nearby pond or be entertained by a crazy fun pirate. The stalls appeal to folk of all ages and tastes, and the dads stick around with the latest inclusion of the brewer’s stand where finely crafted boutique beers make for good company. For the ladies, champagne adds a glamorous tint to the browsing buzz.

As the Wonder Market grows from strength to strength, be sure to catch the next one on Sunday, 1 July (the first Sunday of every month). Find them on Facebook for extra information. Gates open at 09:00 and close around 14:00. Bring your friends, picnic blanket, purse and shopping basket.
