This year’s inaugural festival has been conceptualised and designed as a family festival with a strong bias towards children, with the objective of giving the greater Soweto Community a communal, yet entertaining meeting place to celebrate the Festive season and embrace the spirit of Christmas. Apart from the beautiful electro-magic displays there will be the mini-carousels, brass bands and Soweto choirs, the nativity and African fables mini-theatre, tombola stands, and of course food stalls.

Soweto Festival of Lights has been designed as a storybook walk-through experience where visitors will encounter African fables, nursery rhymes, fairy tales and fantasy lands, creatively depicted by a group of Sowetan wire artists.

This, the first Soweto Festival of Lights, is aimed at people who believe that family values are of the utmost importance and that our children must be afforded the opportunity to let their imaginations wander in a safe, loving and stimulating environment.

The Soweto Festival of Lights will also benefit charities in Soweto, dedicated to caring for the underprivileged children and elderly and encouraging tourism to this vibrant and colorful community.

SABC spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, says, “The SABC welcomes an opportunity to partner with events that assist with nation building. Given the future vision and opportunities offered by this venture, the SABC believes this to be an opportunity to generate enormous goodwill for the National Public ServiceBroadcaster in the hearts and minds of the greater Soweto Community and South Africans at large.”

The SABC will support the event through its TV and Radio platforms.
