Volunteer Man by Dan Clancy from the M.A.R.A. Theatre in Israel, will star Horovitz and Gamliel who have made regular visits to South Africa and to this theatre in particular.

The visit has been made possible again by Tararum.

Volunteer Man is an Obie Award-winning play and garnered a GLAAD nomination (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Award against Defamation) for Best Play of the Year in the United States. This Israeli production enjoyed rave reviews and Horovitz won the Best Actor Award for his role of Adam, the volunteer man.

As he did in The Timekeepers, American playwright Clancy manages to combine humour, serious dilemmas and poignancy with remarkable skill.

The play is an exploration on the rights of a patient with an incurable disease to choose to end his life. It is also a meditation on the 'rightness' of the decision another person makes to aid in the suicide. The story is straightforward: a gentle, introverted gay man volunteers to visit a tough drug dealer who is dying from AIDS in a New York hospital, before the advent of life prolonging drug regimens. They come from different worlds, with different outlooks on what is 'right' or 'wrong', but over time they find a common cause.

Volunteer Man is on for a limited run at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square from Monday, 10 to Saturday, 22 February.

Bookings can be made by phoning the theatre’s box-office on 011 883 8606, Strictly Tickets on 082 553 5901 or by visiting www.ticket.co.za.
