Krynauw won the award for his celebrated Haywire Chandelier that has already attracted much attention from around the world in the past year – including having been featured on the cover of design bible Wallpaper magazine.

The Object that Moves Award goes to the designer of an original product that has experienced great commercial success: aspirational and top-end, yet commercially viable to sell in multiples.

“David Krynauw’s remarkable Haywire Chandelier certainly ticks all those boxes,” said Laurence Brick, creative director of 100% Design South Africa. “The world’s attention is firmly focused on the remarkable design that is coming out of Africa but it is important that if our designers want to play on the world stage, that they are commercially competent too. David not only understands great design, he understands the business of design. Our aim is for designers of his calibre to inspire others to take their design businesses to the next level.”

Krynauw’s prize is an opportunity to exhibit his designs at 100% Design South Africa, which takes place at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, in August this year. 100% Design South Africa programmes director Cathy O’Clery welcomed David Krynauw’s win, saying his presence at the exhibition would be a great privilege.

“We are immensely proud that someone of David’s calibre will be at 100% Design South Africa. We are going to be showcasing the best of local and international design that is available in this country and it is essential that one of our design stars – who is being recognised around the world – is offered the opportunity to inspire his local audience.”

Other winners at the Southern Guild Design Foundation Awards include Andile Dyalvane, Bonga Jwambi, Thabo Pitso, Bronze Age and Missibaba. The awards were held during the GUILD international design fair in Cape Town. Trevyn McGowan, co-founder of Southern Guild, said: “Our aim is to make a radical difference to the industry. We want to give support to the development of designers, both established and emerging, helping to integrate good business models and building a more vibrant and professional design industry.”
