In this role, Van Tonder will research and analyse market data to identify what financial wellness means for different types of consumers in different life stages, using micro- and macro-economic factors to provide guidance on how consumers can boost their financial wellness.

Van Tonder brings a wealth of experience to Multiply, with a history in economic research and crafting indices from data to explain the impact of economic trends to the public at large.

He joins Multiply from the University of South Africa’s Personal Finance Research and Bureau of Market Research, and during his illustrious career has worked as a deputy director and senior economist at National Treasury, as well as being a specialist economics journalist at Rapport.

“Johann has deep insights into trends in economics, and can identify how these trends impact the financial wellness of individuals,” says Johan Kleu, head: Research and Development, MMI Wellness and Rewards. “His innate ability to translate complex economic data into accessible information is a great asset for Multiply, and a great benefit to our members.”

Van Tonder holds a B.Com, Hon. B. Com (Economics), and an M.Com from the University of the Free State, and has studied further at the World Bank, the Oxford Institute and the University of Pretoria.
