The criteria for Kasi Star Brands is to investigate brands that are used most loyally by South Africa’s township also known as ‘kasi’ consumers, irrespective of background or living standard.

Winners were announced per category, as well as the overall Top 10 brands kept in South African township households. Tiger Brands was the star of the show, with five of its brands including Albany featuring in the Top 10. Albany was the leading brand in the bread category and was listed as number six overall.

“We are very happy with the outcomes of the Kasi Star Brands awards as it represents the purchase behaviour and brand loyalty of our core market. We hope to maintain this standard and hopefully move up the ranks in the Kasi Star Brands next year,” says Albany’s marketing manager Nosipho Mokabela.

According to Ask Afrika, the survey represents 73% of the overall South African township population. Face-to-face interviews were conducted within around 6763 township residents. The survey is believed to represent the views of over nine million ‘kasi’ consumers living in South Africa.
