This will bring them one step closer to being mobile and independent which will in turn allow them employment opportunities, social freedom and many other life changing experiences.

“Our programme identifies the ability and agility of each candidate to handle the controls of the vehicle safely,” says Ari Seirlis, CEO of QASA. “In addition, the specially adapted vehicles cater for all mobility impairments and include facilities for the training driver as well."

The project also requires the sensitising of provincial authorities in driver testing methods that ultimately lead to their qualifications to drive on South African roads. “Our aim is to provide people with disabilities the freedom to drive around without relying on others,” says Seirlis.

Driving Ambitions has been operational and successful in Gauteng since October 2010 and in 2014, Driving Ambitions was entered into the SAB Foundation Innovation Awards competition with over 170 other entrants. After going through a rigorous adjudication process Driving Ambitions was awarded third place in South Africa. QASA received R350 000 which enabled QASA to bring Driving Ambitions to KwaZulu-Natal in 2015.

“Needless to say this has opened doors for me not only in terms of work but also in social realms. I will now be able travel and be free and not locked in the space of public transport,” says Kgotso Nhlapo one of QASA’s successful Driving Ambitions candidates.

Another successful candidate, Thabiso Molopo, says; “My first day driving, I felt quite nervous because I wasn’t familiar with a converted car.  I’ve never driven a car before.  So the whole experience was amazing.  I enjoyed each and every moment of the time I was practicing.”

The Newsclip service allows QASA to track the successes of their driving candidates.
