Shoprite and Checkers have kicked off their #ActsofWarmth winter campaign which aims to inspire South Africans to act for warmth. The campaign launched on Wednesday, 17 June with well-known South African personalities taking up the challenge.
All it takes is a simple deed of kindness that brings warmth to someone’s life for Shoprite Checkers to act too! The challenge is to help someone in need with an act of warmth, spread the message and share it on social media with the hashtag #ActsOfWarmth and encourage others to do something meaningful and warm too! The more people participate and share their #ActsOfWarmth using the hashtag, the more food, blankets, beanies, scarfs and gloves Shoprite and Checkers will donate to communities and charity organisations across the country, to further assist in warming them up in the cold months ahead.
Popular radio and TV personality, Liezel van der Westhuizen, visited the Saartjie Baartman Centre for Women and Children in Cape Town and spoke about her involvement. “I got involved after spending a night out on the streets, handing out soup and blankets to various people in need. I think Shoprite Checkers’ #ActsOfWarmth campaign will bring warmth to many,” she says. “I chose the centre because they provide warmth, love and a safe haven for women and children who are survivors of abuse.”
Local musician, DJ Tira took up the #ActsOfWarmth challenge and distributed blankets, beanies, scarves and mittens to the KwaMashu Care Society in Durban. He says; "I care a lot about the elderly and I feel they sometimes get neglected after investing their time raising future generations. So every time I get a chance to assist, I grab it with both hands."
Metro FM DJ, Ismail Abrahams, says that without a doubt, Johannesburg has the harshest winters and he wants to help warm as many people as possible. He chose Footprints P.L.A.Y. (Participating in the Lives of Youth) for #ActsOfWarmth as they do everything he would do on a daily basis if he could.
With the #ActsofWarmth campaign Shoprite and Checkers aims to give South Africans the chance to work together and make a substantial difference this winter. It only takes a simple act like donating blankets or food, clothing, socks or shoes, maybe even something more spontaneous like a cup of soup, coffee, or a meal for someone out in the cold. Just share it with the hashtag #ActsofWarmth and together South Africans can ensure this winter will be remembered for its warmth.
