The tournament, which took place from Wednesday, 24 to Friday, 26 June, saw 80 young girls enjoy playing soccer against one another and learning some valuable life skills from the former Banyana Banyana captain.

With a vision to improve the lives of underprivileged youths, the event was hosted for girls between the ages of 14 and 18-years-old from some of the nearby junior and senior schools.

“It is wonderful to have been involved in an event such as this one. It is something that I am extremely passionate about, as it gives me the opportunity to mentor aspirant young girls, impart some valuable coaching advice, and ultimately judge the Semi Final and Final matches,” explains Amanda Dlamini.

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation, housed within the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre (DTHC) at the University of Cape Town, is committed to the pursuit of excellence in research, treatment, training and prevention of HIV and related infections in Southern Africa.

The Foundation, supported by the Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and his wife Leah has been in existence as a “not for profit” organization since 2004. “As always, Jockey is proud to partner with Amanda and also the DTHC. The work that they are doing for communities is extremely valuable, and something that we look always look forward to be involved with,” confirms Jockey’s marketing associate, Natalie Bennie.

Former Banyana Banyana captain, Amanda Dlamini, became a Jockey brand ambassador in 2014. Through the Amanda Dlamini Foundation, which seeks to inspire young girls in underprivileged communities by providing mentorship and coaching clinics in football, Jockey and Dlamini have managed to touch lives of countless young women.

Through this exciting initiative, Jockey donated 500 branded t-shirts and drawstring bags for the girls that took part, as well as the young spectators. They also donated Jockey underwear for Boys and Girls to the Desmond Tutu Foundation to the Retail Value of R15 000.

The Amanda Dlamini Foundation is a soccer-based initiative focused at educating young girls at soccer clinics, mentoring them on the basics of football and life skills. The program promises to bring young girls together and teach them basic soccer skills and valuable life skills through an intimate session describing her rise from humble beginnings to the national team.

“One of my dreams is to see young girls being successful in future. This dream mainly depends on how they conduct yourselves from now, and that is why I hold these workshops. I want these girls to know that nothing is impossible in life if you put your education and talent first always,” says Dlamini.

The two-day event culminated in a final between Kleinberg Primary School and Marine Primary School in the primary school category, and Ocean View High School and R.V High School in the senior school category, with Marine Primary School and R.V. High School winning their respective matches.

“Congratulations to all of the learners that participated and especially to winning teams. Each and every girl put in a marvellous effort,” says Bennie.
Earl Mentor, representative from DTHC, ends, “Thank you to both Jockey and Amanda Dlamini for partnering with us at this event. The event was an absolute success and we look forward to organising many more in the future.”
