In 2015, the focus teams set out to help female learners in grade 9 with subject selection and career choices. The KZNSC outreach teams provided valuable insight and information and inspired many young people to strive to continue their education after school in pursuit of careers such as Law, Engineering and Science to name a few.

Learners were also given the opportunity to experience science “in real life” through live science show demonstrations and experiments conducted by the KZNSC team.

Learners were excited to have the teams at their schools. They responded enthusiastically to introductory presentations, role modelling discussions and interactive workshops that illustrated how subject selection and careers are interlinked and how choosing the right subjects is integral to making good future career choices and unlocking opportunities.

When asked to point out the most enjoyable part of the programme, many of the learners responded that they enjoyed the presentation and role modelling sessions because these were informative. The learners were able to relate to the presenters and saw these young women, who had pursued studies in various scientific fields, as role models.

In August, the KwaZulu-Natal Science Centre team will be returning to the Umkhanyakude district again targeting just over 3000 grade 9 female learners at selected schools.
