Susan Boyle "dreamed a dream" and it came true

by kerryn le cordeur on 23 April 2009

ImageImageAt the beginning of the week, I was asked if I’d heard about Susan Boyle, a contestant on the new season of British reality TV program, Britain’s Got Talent. Being slightly obsessed with all things reality TV-related, I decided to find out about this woman who seemed to have captured everyone’s attention.

Boyle is a 47-year-old, unemployed charity worker who lives with her cat in a small Scottish village. She is awkward and unattractive and yet in the two weeks since she first appeared on British television, she has become something of a worldwide phenomenon. She has attracted 40 million views on just one YouTube link; appeared on international television shows such as Larry King Live and Good Morning America, with an invitation to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show; and has been interviewed and reported on in the international press, from The Times to People magazine. In my research, I even found a Wikipedia entry for this woman who was unknown outside of her small community less than a month ago.

So what is it that has turned Boyle into an international star? Maybe it is because she is something of a spectacle – this perculiar woman, ridiculed when she first stepped onto stage, who can sing like an angel (singing “I dreamed a dream” just to add emotion to the mix), and in so doing has given society hope that, despite adversity, dreams can be realised if we are are courageous enough to put ourselves out there.

Or maybe it’s the power of the media – to sensationalise the situation and create an emotional response in viewers, use social media to distribute the video clip and start discussions worldwide, and as a result, create publicity for Britain’s Got Talent.

Either way, the story of Susan Boyle has created a bit of light relief amidst the stress currently felt around the world. According to a story on CNN.com, “She"s a modern-day Cinderella, and these days, it"s a wonderful distraction and inspiration to witness the triumph of the human spirit.”

I will certainly be following her journey with interest.
