Email as a form of social media

by Leigh Andrews on 9 September 2009

Duct Tape Marketing has published an interesting post on the most neglected form of social media – email. The post points out that people have sent out email with ‘tell a friend’ or ‘forward to a friend’ buttons and links for years – as a result, it may well have actually been the first form of social media. Despite this, email marketers seem to be ignoing the integration of social media into the email mix.

Email is often the first point of interaction in the business environment, and some industries (such as publishing) thrive on it as a form of communication – both internal and external. Therefore, what better way to get those who are hesitant about getting on the social media bus to start engaging online?

Duct Tape Marketing adds that you email signature is the idea place to advertise your social media presence, by including links to your Facebook/a>; LinkedIn; Twitter profiles and blog feeds.

The newly-launched Mozilla-based Postbox application lets you post from your downloadable email directly to Facebook, Twitter, and FriendFeed.

What might have started off as a form of personal/ one-on-one/ one-on-group communication has expanded and now definitely has a place in the social media sphere.
