Facebook undergoes another makeover

by kerryn le cordeur on 12 February 2010

ImageFacebook is undergoing a makeover once again – possibly risky, considering the outcry the last time it did so, with petitions to ‘Bring back the old Facebook’ and threats to stop using the social networking site cropping up all over the place; although I’d be hard pressed to even tell you what exactly the ‘old’ Facebook looked like now! Nevertheless, the creators have taken the plunge and are in the process of fully launching the long-planned redesign – I logged in to see my new home page for the first time last night.

So, what exactly are the changes that have been made? Well, according to the Facebook blog, in the top menu, you’ll find your newest notifications; requests; and messages. The Home and Profile links can now be found in the top-right corner along with your Account menu, which includes your privacy settings and the ability to log out. The left menu has been organised to make it easier for you to communicate with and discover content from your friends. You can now access your messages and other core features, as well as see which of your friends are online (which can also still be seen in the Chat bar in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen), all in one place, to the left of your News Feed. The photos dashboard allows you to browse recent photos of your friends (a new and improved photo uploader has also been launched); the events dashboard lists upcoming events you and your friends are attending; and the friends dashboard helps you find friends; see who has recently updated their profile; and filter your News Feed. It is also easier to find and interact with applications and games, via these new links on the home page. Facebook Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has also reportedly said that the company plans to roll out “something cool” every month from now on.

At the same time, in the wake of the war it seems is raging between Google and Facebook, what with the launch of Google Buzz, Facebook has announced that you can now connect with your Facebook friends everywhere via Facebook Chat, with the more than two-billion chat messages sent on the site every day now able to be sent from your favourite desktop instant messaging client. This means that you’ll never miss a message when you have to navigate away from Facebook, and you’ll be able to control how and where you chat with your Facebook friends.

TechCrunch adds that the social networking site is also completely rewriting its email messaging product in preparation for the launch of a fully featured webmail product to rival Gmail. This will mean that there will be full POP/IMAP support (for all you techno whizzes out there) so that users can access the account other than through Facebook itself. Your email account name will be your vanity url, ie. vanityurl@facebook.com (hope you picked out something sensible when choosing that a few months ago ;) ).

Add to all this Facebook’s recent announcement of its 400-millionth user and its 100-million users using Facebook Mobile and it would seem that Facebook is definitely retaining its position at the top of not only the social networking, but the web food chain.
