Struggling to get a message across? Make it viral

by Leigh Andrews on 4 November 2010

Have you ever been in the situation where you post something on a social network, realise you’re made a slight error and go back to change it a few minutes later, only to find your friends have already commented and picked up on it? Welcome to the viral nature of the interweb. While its virtues extend from being the easiest way to spread a message across the globe, to also being one of the cheapest and fastest methods of doing so, it’s the internet’s viral nature that makes it such a great avenue for marketers to consider.

Whether you prefer to tweet your every thought, constantly update your Facebook status or upload short self-shot videos of your daily life on YouTube, there’s no denying that social networking is becoming increasingly addictive, particularly for the younger generation that has grown with the internet and technological developments.

A recent episode of Carte Blanche Consumer featured the views of Hong Kong-based futurist and author of Futuretainment, Mike Walsh, who commented on the rise of ‘teenage YouTube hall bloggers’, which is where teenage girls share videos of their recent shopping purchases online, for their friends’ approval. Who would watch something like this? Walsh stated: “It turns out, millions of people. It's got to the point that Macy's and some of the big retailers in the United States have actually cut deals with these teenage hall bloggers to give them free products because they're having more influence on young girls' spending habits than catalogues and TV commercials.”

Do you agree that the online video-sharing space is the next big advertising and influencing platform? Or is it just a fad favoured by the hyperconnected youth? Share your thoughts below.
