Eradicating e-waste

by Leigh Andrews on 15 October 2008

ImageIn honour of today being International Blog Action Day, I`ve decided to blog about a topic not directly in line with this year"s theme of poverty, but one which may well cause readers to take action - the importance of eradicating e-waste.

Most people don’t give a second thought to e-waste: that’s old or discarded electronic devices like cellphones, computers and TVs. However, there’s been international press focus lately on the need for green centres to be developed, for the ‘collection and dumping of e-waste in a more environment-friendly manner’.

Believe it or not, South Africa’s leading the pack on this issue. An electronic waste management facility was launched in Cape Town a few months ago, in order to combat ‘the fastest-growing waste stream in South Africa’. The facility recycles the valuable parts of electronic devices (think plastics and certain metals), and disposes of the rest in an environmentally sustainable fashion.

Nokia also launched a recycling initiative in East Africa a few months ago, offering consumers a structured way to dispose of old mobile phones and accessories.

The move comes amid fears that cast-off mobile phones are posing an increasing risk of hazardous toxic chemicals in the developing world. According to a study mentioned in the Business Standard Online, the e-waste inventory for the year 2005 was estimated to be 146 180 tonnes. This is expected to exceed 800 000 tonnes by 2012.

Scary stuff. While media consumption is definitely on the increase - particularly in the mobile sector, with cellphone contract holders claiming a new handset every two years, the resulting "waste" is fast accumulating. Take action by recycling your outdated phone, if possible - by giving it to someone less fortunate, for example (thus slightly improving their standard of living and doing your bit for poverty).
