Help for publishers struggling through the financial crisis

by Leigh Andrews on 12 August 2009

ImageCall it what you like, but there's no doubt that most industries - not least of which the publishing beat - have been hit hard by the recession/ credit crunch/ 'tough financial times'.

There's talk of big-name newspapers and magazines letting go of their print editions completely as they're just too expensive to print and distribute, and perhaps charging for content posted online, which was previously free. For local and community newspapers, there's often less competition, which means that the print editions and websites of these smaller newspapers remain the focal points for finding out what’s happening in their coverage areas.

While confusion about the future of the industry reigns and publishers seem to be running around like headless chickens, picking at straws - any straw - to stay afloat, WAN_IFRA offers a helping hand, by organising a conference titled 'Managing the Crisis', set to take place at the Frontline Media Club in London on 28 and 29 September.

In addition to the financial pressures, the conference will focus on the impact of evolving consumers; competition from traditional and non-traditional sources; new personnel requirements; technological changes; and, perhaps most importantly, how management can avoid being overwhelmed by these changes. The conference will begin with an analysis of these issues, and include case studies about how newspapers are dealing with different aspects of the crisis. It will conclude with a 'reality check', where participants can have round table discussions with the experts on what they could do more of, and what they can do better. Sounds very worthwhile.

I was therefore pleased to learn that WAN-IFRA has also launched a 'Managing the Crisis' blog for speakers; participants; and anyone interested in contributing to the topic - even those who will not attend the conference, like me. It can be found at managingthecrisis.blogspot.com.
