I don’t like Facebook ‘like’

Facebook quietly launched a new application this week – called ‘like’, we now have the option of giving friends’ status updates, messages and photos an ‘I like this’ thumbs up… over and above the existing ‘comment’ functionality.

All good and well, but I don’t think there’s a need. It’s not even as if our chosen ‘likes’ are grouped together somewhere, as on FriendFeed or StumbleUpon.

Steven Musil, Night News Editor at CNET News also has his reservations, stating “The move is the latest in a growing list of features Facebook has borrowed from FriendFeed.” He adds: “Now we have the “Like” button showing up, and it makes a Facebook news feed item’s footer even look the same as FriendFeed’s. Facebook now has “Add Comment - Like - Read More” below items, where FriendFeed has “Comment - Like - Hide - More.” Coincidence? I think not.”

Just an added function to further complicate our online social activities, or an easier way to approve than typing out an entire comment... What do you think?

I agree - it is just another way of trivialising our online 'social' activities. Not even having to write a comment or provide some opinion etc%3f how lazy. I would rather have a polling option%2c where users can create their own polls for friends to take part in than this.... %0a
