From wizards to stormtroopers and everything in-between, Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand witnessed a colourful transformation from Friday, 24 June to Sunday, 26 June. Despite the chill, there was a vibrant energy in the air, owing to the passion of attendees.

For many, the highlight was a board-game arena where fantasy worlds became the settings for pitched battles. For others, it was book signings by sci-fi and fantasy authors such as the internationally celebrated American fantasy author Raymond E. Feist, or the debates and lectures that afforded an opportunity for like minds to come together. For some it was simply a chance to shop for geeky gear and collector’s items, like an R2D2 coffee mug, or a replica of Harry Potter’s magic wand.

Also in attendance was Battle Heritage South Africa, a group of chivalrous modern warriors that engage in full contact medieval combat (in authentic period attire), giving demonstrations of their weapons, equipment and techniques. Members of the general public with enough bravery were even offered the chance to take them on in the fighting ring.

Icon is South Africa’s longest running comic and game convention and this year’s event was the largest to date, held for the first time at the massive Gallagher Convention Centre venue. Although only occupying one exhibition hall, a far cry from the monstrous Comic-Con events in the US after which it is modelled, Icon is bound to continue growing as a home for all things geek in South Africa.
