Top crime expert and one of the masterminds behind the Crime Line initiative, Yusuf Abramjee will be in Port Elizabeth on 27 October 2009 to talk about 'How South Africans can assist in the fight against crime and Crime Line’s role in society.

The breakfast, hosted by Algoa FM, which supports the Crime Line initiative, will highlight some of the country’s top crime spots and how the public can help in the fight against crime by being aware, and involved in their communities.

Abramjee is a highly involved South African citizen. Apart from being the current broadcasting head of Primedia News and Current Affairs, he is also on the advisory boards of a number of universities. In 2001 he was given the Security Association of South Africa’s 'Security Personality of the Year' Award in recognition of his dedicated and comprehensive coverage of security and crime related incidents in South Africa and relentlessly seeking the truth in an unbiased and uncompromising manner. Later in 2008, he received a Certificate of Appreciation from the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) for 'rendering service of a particularly meritorious nature to the SAPS for his Crime Line initiative'.

The Crime Line initiative celebrated its second year in June, and was hailed as one of the country’s most effective crime fighting initiatives so far. Over the last two years the initiative has lead to almost 800 arrests and goods have been seized to the value of R29-million. It gives South African citizens the opportunity to report suspected crimes anonymously via SMS or through the Crime Line website.

“With Crime Line you have the power to help fight crime without endangering yourself,” says Abramjee.

The initiative involves numerous partners and supporters, from the police; government; media institutions; and the private sector which all contribute towards spreading the Crime Line message, 'to blow the whistle on crime'.

The breakfast will take place from 07h15 to 09h30 at The Boardwalk Tsitsikamma Conference Centre on Tuesday, 27 October. The topic is 'How South Africans can assist in the fight against crime and Crime Line’s role'.
