Judging Amy

Continues: Thursdays at 20:30

Amy Brenneman (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice) returns for a third season of this award-winning drama series based on the real-life story of Brenneman’s mother – who was a judge and one of the first women to graduate from Harvard University.

She plays Amy Gray, who serves as a judge in a family court. The series touches on the cases she hears and her own experiences as a divorced single mother trying to rebuild her life, as well as those of her mother Maxine (Tyne Daly) and her daughter Lauren.

In this season, Amy, Maxine and Lauren have trouble adjusting to their new living arrangements. In the courtroom, Amy hears some interesting cases – including one involving a woman who locked her children in the boot of her car because she had no one to care for them while she was at work.

Daly (Cagney and Lacey, Wings) won an Emmy® for best supporting actress in a drama series in 2003 for her performance in Judging Amy. The show also raked in four ASCAP awards for best TV series, and was nominated three times for Golden Globes®.

Lorenzo’s Oil
Saturday, 21 January at 20:30

Apart from Nick Nolte’s questionable Italian accent, this film is a real stunner. It tells the absorbing true-life story of the Odone family, which is plunged into despair when they find out that their seven-year-old son Lorenzo is suffering from a rare, degenerative brain disorder called ALD.

The film senstively charts the determination of Lorenzo’s parents, Augusto and Michaela (played by Nolte – Affliction, 48 Hours and Academy Award® -winner Susan Sarandon – Thelma and Louise, Dead Man Walking), who flatly refuse to sit by helplessly and watch their son die. Having been brushed off by doctors and scientists, they set about tirelessly researching the illness and experimenting with various treatments in the hope of finding a cure.

A tearjerker but also a monument to sheer tenacity, this Oscar®-nominated human drama is as watchable as ever. Directed by George Miller (1992)
