Magubane’s work has appeared in 30 international solo exhibitions, 33 South African solo exhibitions, and numerous group exhibitions. He has published 17 books, with his work also appearing on the cover of National Geographic.

In 1990, former president Nelson Mandela approached Magubane to be his personal photographer, covering the period from Mandela’s release from prison to his 1994 inauguration. Magubane was also awarded an honorary fellowship by the Royal Photographic Society in London, and has received honorary doctorates from seven universities.

Magubane has spent five decades photographing child labourers. It has touched his life in a meaningful way, which comes through in his many striking and moving images. These images portray the shocking living conditions and extreme poverty these children live and work in.
