From our feathered friends in The Brave Little Rooster and The Golden Goose to the classic stories of the Magical Soup Stone and The Three Wishes; from The Pudding Tree to My Son is Always Right and King Arthur and the Sword in The Stone … The stories, the legends and the magic have been transported from the pages of these books to a Johannesburg stage not too far away.

Experience the characters, the colours, the dancing and singing like only the colourful cast of Story Book Theatre can deliver, under the careful direction and production of theatre veterans Jill Girard and Keith Smith, who have been bringing theatre to children for decades.

“It’s not just about passing on the wonder of these ageless tales; it’s also about introducing young theatregoers to the theatre, and inculcating a culture of love for the arts and the stage,” says Girard. “The show is incredibly interactive, and the children love the stories and the music.”

The cast members are bringing this year’s Story Book Theatre classics alive through the use of engaging narration, music, movement and puppetry. The performers – Sarah Malherbe, Andile Magxaki, Kyra Green, Yamikani Mahaka-Phiri and Jaydene Marais – are proficient in musical theatre and know how to get the audience involved.

Musical director Drew Rienstra has provided a kaleidoscope of toe-tapping renditions of popular hit songs. Providing the colour and breathing vibrant life into the stories is the set design by Grant Knottenbelt and costumes by Linda Wilson.
