The annual Plat Africa competition which has been running for 16 years, has become synonymous with platinum jewellery design and is an important aspect of Anglo American Platinum’s beneficiation activities. Platinum jewellery remains one of the most sought-after metals and South Africa supplies approximately 80% of global demand for this rare resource. The competition is open to students, apprentices and professional jewellers working in South Africa and the industry's top achievers were recognised for their work.

The winner in the student category was Karin Niehaus from Jack Friedman Jewellers, while top honours in the professional category went to Bhekithemba Ngema from Ben & Co Designs.

The event also saw the launch of the 2016 edition of SHINE/SKITTER magazine - an annual glossy showcase of the world’s finest gems, jewellery designs and watches. The latest issue is bagged with the bumper December 2015 editions of FAIRLADY, True Love, Sarie and Grazia.

SHINE/SKITTER is the biggest luxury, jewellery and watch publication in South Africa, previous cover models of this annual magazine include international model Candice Boucher as well as the self-dubbed Queen of SA Media and TV presenter, Bonang Matheba.

This year's editions of SHINE/SKITTER feature a quartet of TV presenters, each with their own spotlight on the four magazine covers: Expresso presenters Zoe Brown and Leigh-Anne Williams, Top Billing's Jade Hubner as well as Afternoon Express host, Bonnie Mbuli.

SHINE/SKITTER is published by Media24 Magazines’ Women’s Interest Division, with Yvonne Shaff at the helm of the SHINE/SKITTER advertising sales. “Once again this year’s SHINE/SKITTER project has been an incredible experience – working with some of the leading luxury brands in the world. We are so proud to be able to offer them a beautiful platform on which to showcase their products and designs to South African shoppers,” says Shaff.

“The ongoing support for SHINE/SKITTER in a challenging economic climate is proof that true quality and luxury will always endure,” she says

Editing SHINE/SKITTER this year, was veteran magazine editor Jacquie Myburgh Chemaly who, with her team, compiled the very latest in trends and news from the world of luxury and accessory fashion.

SHINE/SKITTER is like no other magazine in the world. It is unashamedly luxurious and indulgent – with incredible advertisers who go to remarkable lengths to bring us beautiful designs and pieces for the pages of the magazine,” says Myburgh Chemaly.

“Consumers are waking up to the fact that luxury is not simply an indulgence, but an investment in quality. The pages of SHINE/SKITTER 2016 reflect this appreciation of luxury and aim to inspire some exciting Christmas shopping,” she concludes.
