The series explores the emotional impact that comes as the lines between humans and machines become increasingly blurred.

At the centre of the four concurrent storylines explored throughout Humans is the flawed but loving Hawkins family. Joe Hawkins (Tom Goodman-Hill) believes the addition of a robotic servant to the household will give them back the time they so desperately need, but Laura (Katherine Parkinson) senses something different about their new Synth Anita (Gemma Chan) - there's something not right.

Widower George Millican (William Hurt) treats his out-of-date Synth Odi (Will Tudor) like a son. When the National Health Service gives him a new Synth named Vera (Rebecca Front) after Odi malfunctions, he must hide his bond with Odi or risk losing him. Leo (Colin Morgan) and his Synth Max (Ivanno Jeremiah) are searching for someone and they have a mysterious man named Hobb (Danny Webb) on their trail who is trying to uncover a secret before it can destroy humanity.

Meanwhile, D.S. Peter Drummond (Neil Maskell) works for the Special Technologies Task Force involved with solving Synth-related disputes. Since Synths rarely malfunction, he spends his time shuffling paperwork, until the day he investigates a case that defies all possibility.

Writers Sam Vincent and Jonathan Brackley collaborated on the series. Humans is an adaptation of the award-winning Swedish sci-fi drama Äkta människor (Real Humans). The show is executive produced by Jane Featherstone, Derek Wax, Henrik Widman, Jonathan Brackley and Real Humans creator Lars Lundström.

Humans airs every Wednesday from 17 February at 21:00 on SABC3.
