Leading journalists win in Citadel competition

Personal Finance, Moneyweb, Financial Mail and FINweek journalists delivered winning entries for the 2008 Citadel Words on Money journalism awards, presented on 15 May.

Bruce Cameron, editor of Personal Finance, won the overall winner's prize for a fourth time, while Financial Mail's Rob Rose, winner in the print category in 2006, won the prestigious Chairman's Award for investigative reporting. The first overall winner of the Award at its launch event in 2000, Stephen Cranston of Financial Mail, won the Peregrine Award for reporting on alternative investment.

"The award categories were changed for the 2008 award to allow entrants to compete on content and not by media category as before. The amended award attracted a record number of entries, especially the new categories: consumer education and analysis and opinion,” Citadel CEO Neil Brown said at the Award event hosted in Johannesburg.

“The popular topics of 2007 were the Fidentia scandal, and the new credit act and its implications for investors. Financial issues for lower income earners also attracted the judges’ attention,” Brown said.

“Each year we see growth in reporting about personal finance and investment issues and every year a wider selection of media enters for the Award, confirmation of the interest from readers, listeners and television audience in these topics. The judges were impressed by the entries in the category ‘newcomer of the year’,” Brown said.

The judges for the 2008 Awards were: Ms Prem Govender, Chairperson of the Financial Planning Institute (FPI); Mr. John Arneson, Chief Executive of the FPI; Mr. Robert Brand of the Pearson Chair of Economics journalism at Rhodes University; and Mr. Nick Kotch, freelance journalist and media trainer and former Reuters Bureau Chief.

The winners in all categories:
*Breaking News: Bruce Cameron, Personal Finance.
*Consumer Education: Helen Ueckermann for features published in Manwees magazine.
*Consumer Education Merit Award: The late Tonny Mafu for articles published in Business Report.
*Best feature: Alec Hogg for interviews broadcast on Moneyweb's Power Hour radio programme.
