Started in September, the Roving Groundsman programme is a project to develop local groundsman at each premier league venue in the greater Durban area and improve the standard of club pitches.

Headed up by Phil Russel (retired curator at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead), the programme has already seen results, and recently Oliver Ncgobo from Chatsworth Oval was awarded with the Groundsman of the Month Award for October.

The Opel Corsa vehicle sponsored by Canon Umhlanga Ridge is for the use of Phil and will enable him to visit grounds easily and effectively as part of the programme.In addition to the bakkie maintenance equipment to the value of R60 000 was purchased.

Gary and Elaine Hudson, directors of Canon Umhlanga Ridge, were excited about the difference this sponsorship could make. “We are passionate about this project and truly believe that it can it will make a significant difference for the game of cricket in Durban. We look forward to leaving a Canon legacy for years to come.” Jay Naidoo, manager of amateur cricket, commented: “Phil’s vast experience and knowledge of preparing pitches in England, South Africa and India can not be wasted. He will add tremendous value to wicket preparation at club venues.”
