Mbalula sports controversy

The past few weeks have seen President Jacob Zuma trending for all the wrong reasons, but this week Sports minister Mbalula stole the spotlight by banning South Africa from bidding for international cricket, rugby and athletics tournaments due to a lack of transformation.

Although Mbalula is no stranger to controversy, this new development may cause some permanent damage to the future of South African sport, locally and internationally.

Think you’ve heard it all? Think again. Although he did not end up on the trending list, Zuma did make quite an ironic statement at the Freedom day Address in Giyani, Limpopo that “politicians were abusing their political right”. This leaves us wondering if Zuma has any idea what his recent Nkandla saga was about.

One problem at a time, we guess.

Quench your thirst with some Lemonade

This week in Hollywood saw some out of control stories, like Lil’ Kim’s transformation (we like to call it the female Michael Jackson look) but this week’s trending report would not be the same without queen Bey.

Earlier this week, Beyoncé released a surprise new album titled Lemonade. Give it a quick listen and an awkward question crosses your mind: Is Beyoncé confirming the Jay Z cheating rumours?

According to the queen Bey herself, the answer is no. She responded to the speculation during her first concert in the Formation world tour by dedicating her ballad Halo to her “beautiful husband”.

We don’t know how you feel about the new album, but our feelings are similar to those of her ‘beautiful husband’ in this tweet.

Mall of Africa opening angers Gauteng commuters

In other news, the new Mall of Africa located in Midrand opened on Thursday, 28 April. However, not everyone is pleased about it. The grand opening of the mall caused serious delays on the N1 and N3, which left many Gauteng commuters stuck in traffic on their way to and from work (#sadface for those of us using the highway).

If only the inside of the mall looked better than the traffic jams outside. According to reports, at least 97 000 people attended the grand opening to take advantage of the great deals.

Is it really worth the two-hour long traffic jams and claustrophobia? We don’t know, but we do know there was no economic slump at the mall that day.

Game of Thrones:  Is Jon Snow REALLY dead?

*Warning: the following content  contains spoilers

On the lighter side (unless you are a Jon Snow fan), Game of Thrones fans have been ranting and raving about the premier of the new season which debuted on Sunday, April 24 in the United States.

The first episode, even though it was quite confusing and disturbing (par for the course really), it gave some insight to where each character’s story is heading. In short: Melisandre is super old (and topless), Arya Stark is blind, homeless and gets beaten by the Wait with a stick , Daenerys aka Dani will be required to live out her days in Vaes Dothrak, the beginning of Tyrion Lannister’s stewardship of  Mereen goes up in smoke… literally and Jon Snow really is dead, really really dead, but we will get to that now.

This season of GoT promises to be a thrilling journey of unexpected twists and turns, such as the possible resurrection of Jon Snow. According to an article by Huffington Post, the pattern of Snow’s blood in the…snow… as we took in his rotting corpse may hold some clues as to what will happen to him during the course of the show. Let’s hope one of these theories proves to be true.

If this was the trend you were waiting for while reading this report, we’re sorry for the delay, but GoT to save the best for last, right?

Happy long weekend, see you next week.
