Hlaudi with a chance of censorship and resignation

It’s no surprise that the SABC was trending yet again this week. COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, is on a roll with his shocking announcements, and just as you think it can’t get any worse, it does.

Although this week saw no controversial announcements from Hlaudi himself, the SABC did see the shocking resignations of former chief executive, Jimi Matthews, and MetroFM presenter, Tbo Touch. It’s unclear why Touch has resigned from MetroFM after so many years, but as for Jimi Matthews, his departure was because he feels his “values have been compromised”. So in other words, he’s g*tvol.

It looks like Matthews is not the only one. This morning, the Right2Know campaign are taking their concern of censorship to the SABC buildings and will also be demanding the removal of Motsoeneng. The news is all over Twitter, trending with various hashtags including #Hlaudimustfall #BlackFriday and #NotInOurName. We’re unsure how the events of today may unfold, but we can only hope for the best, or at the very least, not the worst.

Justin Timberlake can go cry a river

In entertainment news, The BET Awards were in full swing last weekend. One of the highlights of the awards was Jesse Williams, better known as Dr. Jackson Avery from Grey’s Anatomy, taking home the BET Humanitarian Award and giving a truly inspiring speech on racism in America. It’s common for fellow celebrities to applaud such a beautiful speech, but when Justin Timberlake made a mention, the backlash began.

Twitter went on a rant, with one particular person asking JT if feeling “inspired” means he will stop appropriating black culture, and even asking to apologise to Janet Jackson for the 2004 Super bowl incident. It could’ve ended there, but JT decided to add fuel to the fire by stating that “we are all the same”.

*Cue gunshots*

JT did apologise for his controversial comments, but you can’t unscramble scrambled eggs, especially the scrambled eggs of inequality and racism. We’re sure he will find a way to rehabilitate his name and regain the trust of his fans, but for now you can relive the drama here.

Twitter takes us back to growing up

Every now and then, random hashtags pop up on Twitter and actually become the most entertaining trends you’ll find, especially when you live in South Africa where waking up to bad news is the norm. This week, the load was lightened with the hashtags #GrowingUpWithMyName and #GrowingUpShy. Here are some of our favourite tweets from both hashtags. Enjoy.

@CommonBlackGirI: #GrowingUpWithMyName Everyone yelling at the sub to correctly pronounce your name and you feel like you're popular

@VictooriaRenee: #GrowingUpWithMyName "Haha hey Victoria… What's your secret?"

@MarioAZarate: #GrowingUpWithMyName "where's your brother Luigi?"

@CheekyHoussein: Waiter: “And what would you like to order?” Me: *turns to mom* #GrowingUpShy.

?@RelatableQuote: #growingupshy when the class is reading out loud and you count the people in front of you so you can find your paragraph and rehearse

@zaynilla: #growingupshy when you're presenting in class and someone says "can you speak up I can’t hear you".

Game of Thrones season six ends with a bang (literally … SPOILERS BELOW)

This Sunday saw the finale to season six of Game of Thrones, and boy, was it a burner (in more ways than one). Cersei got her revenge on EVERYONE by getting Qyburn to blow up the Sept of Baelor with a Guy Fawkes party worth of wildfire; Sam, Gilly and Samwell make it to Citadel where Sam encounters the biggest library ever; Jon Snow gets proclaimed King of the North; Daenerys is on her way to Westeros to kick some ass with her super group; and the Queen of Thorns and Varys fix the Dorne scenes… But that’s not all folks!

While season six had its plodding moments, the last two episodes, being The Battle of the Bastards and The Winds of Winter directed by Miguel Sapochnik, meant season six finished in a rousing fashion and made people hungry for season seven. All we can say is: Bring it on!

In the Game of Thrones, you win or you die! #DarthCersei

Until next time, stay trendy!
