The Frewin competition has been in existence for the past 68 years and recognises urban daily newspapers with a circulation above 40 000 that excel in the criteria laid down by the industry.

The McCall competition has been in existence for the past 57 years. It recognises urban daily newspapers. The 2018 entry criterium changed from a circulation of 50 000 and less to a circulation of 40 000 and less.

In existence for the over 22 years, the Joel Mervis Award aims to recognise urban weekly newspapers, irrespective of their circulation, that excel in the criteria laid down by the industry. This competition is limited to weekly newspapers that have separate teams producing it.

The 2018 Frewin finalists are:

  • Die Burger, and
  • Beeld.
The 2018 McCall finalists are:
  • The Witness
  • Mail and Guardian, and
  • Pretoria News.
The 2018 Joel Mervis finalists are:
  • Sunday Sun 
  • Rapport
  • City Press, and 
  • Naweek Beeld.
The winners will be announced at the prize-giving function on Thursday, 13 September.
