According to the trio, the national lockdown has left countless South African families fighting for survival; families are not able to work and earn an income and this has left many destitute.

Jacaranda FM and East Coast Radio have indicated that they have heard listeners' concerns. The radio stations have partnered with LottoStar with the aim to try and alleviate the financial pressure, and to provide some families with some much-needed relief.

East Coast Radio's Big Favour and Jacaranda FM's Good Morning Angels, along with LottoStar, will each assist struggling families from Monday, 6 April with their share of R1 million. The initiatives will take place on weekdays, on both stations, for two weeks.

Hennie Myburgh, programming manager for Jacaranda FM, says, "We know the entire country is impacted by this pandemic, and we know that as a leader in the community, it is our duty to take charge and help where we can."

"Good Morning Angels already assists weekly and we are now able to help more people in a short space of time," says Myburgh.

The station says that listeners will be able to nominate a family having financial difficulty, due to the lockdown, from Friday, 3 April.

Individuals are encouraged to "tell [them] about someone who's been placed on unpaid leave, entrepreneurs who are unable to operate their businesses or still trying to support staff, or anyone who's lost their job because of the lockdown, and they could be chosen as one of the families to receive a financial boost".

Programming manager for East Coast Radio Zane Derbyshire says that, while the station is in full support of the national lockdown, it wants to see how it can make a meaningful difference to households where income has dried up.

East Coast Radio's Big Favour will be rolled out across the day on the station and the team says that they look forward to assisting families in need, and inspiring their listeners in partnership with LottoStar.

The initiative was launched on Friday, 3 April on both stations.
